Part 4

How to choose an Ad Tracking program

While the price of an Ad Tracking program may be an important factor here are some other features you should take into consideration.

1) Guarantee/Demo

Check if there is a money-back guarantee or a trial period.

Some suppliers also offer a demo.

2) What level of reporting do you require

All programs allow you to view stats online.

They may differ in the extent or detail of reports, for example some may report on the total clicks for each hour period

Some programs may also Email you the stats on a daily basis

3) CGI Script or Online Service ?

Although the operation of Ad Tracking programs is basically the same there is an important distinction between two types of programs

a) CGI Script

You purchase the program outright and it is installed on your site.

If you have some technical knowledge you should be able to install it yourself otherwise the supplier will charge an installation fee.

There are certain pre-conditions and minimum software requirements for programs which run on your site, including access to the cgi-bin, so it's unlikely that free sites will qualify.

Your tracking URLs carry your own domain name.

b) Online Service

You pay a rental (monthly or yearly) for the program.

Your tracking URLs carry the supplier domain name.

So what are the pros and cons of either arrangement ?

4) Affiliate Program

If the supplier provides an affiliate program then you can join to earn commission on sales of the product. Owning the product that you promote always gives that extra advantage: for example you can give an explanation of how you use it or a personal testimonial as to how it has benefited you.
